CONTENT AREA - PROJECT 3:
Mobile Learning
Today's learners are reliant upon their mobile devices for many different things. Utilizing the tiny computer that learners constantly have with them can be a motivating and effective way to provide mobile support and practice to learners who are in a speech and presentation class. The mobile device provides a portable camera, microphone, and speakers-- a small portable speaking studio on the go. With the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to allow a computer to analyze human speech, and more opportunities for Virtual Reality (VR) to simulate being in front of an audience.

Content Area: Speech and Presentations for English L2 Learners
Title: Speaking as Smooth as half a Pecha-Kucha
Pre-Planning
- Big Idea: L2 Learners sometimes have difficulties with fluency and speaking for longer periods without filler words. In order to combat this mobile technology can be used to help students practice their speaking and pronunciation between classes. Leveraging the technology that is already (usually) with them.
- Essential Questions :
- How can learners speak more fluently with less filler words in their presentation.
- How can L2 Speakers of English speak more fluently with less pauses and breaks in their speaking.
- Objectives:
- By the end of the lesson students will have practice speech speaking , with appropriate rhythm, tone and without filler words and pauses.
- To incorporate AI to help give students immediate feedback while they are practicing to keep them from developing bad speaking habits.
- Summative Assessment: Students will present a live "mini"* Pecha-Kucha online event where they present live to other classmates.

LEsson Body
Explanation
This app is considered a personal AI speech coach what differentiates this from apps that will be shown soon is that there are lessons that students will go through to learn about different parts of effective speaking.

Check for Understanding
Both Ummo and Say It Like So are similar to the Orai app in that they are also speech coach apps that use AI for speech recognition and speaking analytics. The difference is these are customizable to the needs of the speaker. Students would move on to one of these apps once they understand the concepts of filler words, pauses and other effective speaking practices.
Extended Practice

Flipgrid - Video for student engagement and formative assessment
Students can practice the "20 images, each for 20 seconds" by submitting a recorded video to a grid in FlipGrid. While this does not replicate fluid live speaking it does give this speaker a chance to practice. Students can also practice by responding to other speakers.

![]() VirtualSpeech - VR Courses iPhone Version
(VR Case Needed) This is a new way of practicing speaking by leveraging the technology of virtual-reality to simulate standing in front of an audience. While the end result of this particular lesson is a video presentation students can still receive some benefit from practicing in front of the virtual audience. |
![]() Google Cardboard – Google VR
When using the VR Apps (like VirtualSpeech on a Mobile it is necessary to use a "viewer" to help shield the peripherals from view. This is not an App, but a box to help the app work. There are many kinds of viewers (and even do-it-yourself instructions for making your own on Google's site). |

Zoom - Video Conferencing, Web Conferencing, Webinars, Screen Sharing
Students will present a live presentation based on the principles of Pecha-Kucha This live synchronous meeting using the free meeting app will be the culmination an experience of their practicing with all the other fluency and good speaking apps to show off their improved continuous speaking.
Note** Instructors can adjust the ratio of slides to seconds. The original is 20 slides @ 20 Seconds each, however based on the learners ability these can be adjusted (10x10, 10x20, or 5x5 etc)
